This study explores the intersection of traditional culture, digital technology, and sustainability through a project conducted at Wenzhou-Kean University in collaboration with the Sea Kiln Art Center on Dongtou Island in Wenzhou (Zhejiang, China). The project was connected to an industrial design studio course, where students utilized tessellation and modeling software to reinterpret local marine culture through the design of a series of innovative 3D tiles. Following the course, selected designs were further developed and materialized as ceramic prototypes. The research adopts a qualitative and practice-based design approach, integrating digital modeling, cultural exploration, and material experimentation. The outcomes demonstrate the potential of digital tools to enhance cultural expression, foster environmental awareness, and strengthen the dialogue between heritage and innovation. Ultimately, the project highlights how design education can serve as a platform for creative experimentation and sustainable collaboration between academia, local artisans, and industry.
