As an important component of Miao traditional dress culture, the Miao pleated skirt holds distinctive value in terms of its color characteristics and cultural connotations. This study focuses on the Miao pleated skirts housed in the Museum of Ethnic Costumes at the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, utilizing the Natural Colour System (NCS) to extract and analyze their color schemes. By systematically examining dimensions such as hue distribution and color composition, the study summarizes the key color features of the Miao pleated skirts. The findings reveal that the skirts predominantly feature rich chromatic colors and skillful use of complementary color combinations to enhance visual impact. Additionally, there is a marked preference for blue and red tones. These color characteristics not only reflect the Miao people's reverence and affection for nature but also embody deep-rooted religious beliefs, social customs, and aesthetic values. The application of the NCS provides a scientific basis for the quantitative analysis of the skirts’ colors and offers insights for both the preservation and innovative design of Miao costume culture.
