Abstract

The deep integration of smart wearable technology with the fashion industry is propelling a systemic transformation that extends considerably beyond the product level. Adopting an analytical lens grounded in value creation logic, this paper develops a conceptual framework to investigate how smart wearable technology reshapes business models within the fashion industry. The analysis reveals that smart wearable technology drives business model innovation through three interrelated mechanisms. First, data-driven transformation extends the source of value from physical products to data and services. Second, connectivity reshaping shifts value delivery from unidirectional distribution toward relational touchpoint networks. Third, profit extension expands value capture from one-time transactions to ongoing recurring revenue streams. Different configurations of these three mechanisms give rise to four typical business model archetypes: product value-added, service subscription, platform ecosystem, and experiential space. Further analysis suggests that while this transformation is redefining competitive barriers, industrial boundaries, and value distribution patterns across the fashion industry, its effectiveness remains contingent upon several boundary constraints, including technological maturity, data privacy regulations, aesthetic autonomy, and organizational adaptability. This paper furnishes a conceptual framework and operational analytical framework for comprehending technology-driven business model innovation and offers theoretical insights to inform digital transformation strategies for fashion enterprises.
